Dr. med. Martin O. Schmiady
is a senior consultant of Cardiac Surgery at the University Hospital Zurich and at the Children`s Hospital Zurich, Switzerland. He studied medicine at the Charité, Univeristy Medicine, Berlin, Germany and specialized in cardiac surgery initially at the German Heart Center in Berlin and then at University Hospital in Zurich.
His research interests are in the field of Mechanical Circulatory Support, Heart transplantation, ex-vivo organ perfusion and structural heart disease. In order to counteract the lack of donor tissue in cardiac surgery, he established a new homograft procurement program in Zurich. In cooperation with the ETH Zurich he focused on the development of an MRI-conditional Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation with the ultimate goal to optimize perfusion and neuroprotective strategies. Martin Schmiady holds a Certificate in Advanced Studies in Higher Education and Teaching Skills from the University of Zurich. He is a passionate teacher and Operating Medical Director of the cardiac surgery Simulation Center of the University Hospital. As an CRM certificated medical simulation instructor he is highly involved in international skills and team trainings focusing on ECMO and eCPR. He is the medical lead of the interdisciplinary Zurich eCPR program. .
